Average hide size: 56 square feet
Weight: 2.5-3.0 ounces per square foot
Thickness: 1.0-1.2 mm
The above diagram should be used as a guide when determining square footage requirements for leather. Individual hides may vary in size, but most large cuts will require a full hide. For example, a 5″ x 5″ cut cannot be achieved from a 25 square foot half hide.
One 54-inch fabric yard is equal to 18 square feet of leather. This equation takes into account the waste factor.
Average hide size = 55-60 square feet
Average half hide = 27 square feet
Half hides are cut down the backbone, in the middle of the hide, from the neck to the tail.
